My name is Daniel Harry. I was a cab driver in New Haven, Connecticut until one day Yale Divinity School gave me a Master of Divinity degree. After that the Christian Church in Ohio ordained me and my life has never been the same. Being “ordained” means the church thinks you can help people follow Jesus. Following Jesus isn’t easy.
Our culture tells us that when someone hits us we should hit back. Jesus tells us that when someone hits us we should let them hit us again. Our culture tells us that abundant life is gained by accumulating wealth and possessions. Jesus tells us that abundant life is gained by giving up possessions and following him. Our culture tells us that poor people are lazy and shiftless, having only themselves to blame. Jesus tells us that poor people are blessed and will inherit the kingdom of heaven.
You would think other Christians would be helpful, but that isn’t always the case. Some Christians say you shouldn’t associate with certain people. Jesus associated with all people, even the outcasts of society. Some Christians say you must behave properly at all times. Jesus led a life filled with impropriety. Some Christians say there are places you shouldn’t go or even be seen in. Jesus went places no decent person would go. His followers go wherever the Holy Spirit drives them.
I am now in Beech Bottom, West Virginia. A group of friends here are trying to figure out what it means to follow Jesus. On March 25th, they invited me to help them follow Jesus and I accepted. We must help each other walk Jesus’ path. Together may we find it. Together may we share it. Together, may we be Community Christian Church.
Every March Community Christian Church goes a little crazy and has a cookout. I’m pretty sure it’s not a coincidence that I was installed as pastor the day the church celebrated March Madness.
Why not go a little crazy yourself and join us? But remember – if you are going to follow Jesus, wear comfortable shoes.
